Sleep Apnea in Children
Supporting Restful Sleep and Healthy Growth
Sleep is essential for your child’s growth, brain development, and emotional well-being. But for some children, undiagnosed sleep apnea can interrupt their rest, leading to tiredness, behavior issues, and even challenges with focus or growth. At Agape Pediatric Dentistry, we take a whole-child approach to dental care, and that includes recognizing signs of sleep-disordered breathing that may start in the mouth.

Our pediatric dental team is trained to spot the oral indicators of sleep apnea and collaborate with families and healthcare providers to support better sleep and healthier development.

What is Pediatric Sleep Apnea?
Pediatric sleep apnea is a condition where a child’s breathing pauses or becomes shallow during sleep. This often happens because of a blocked or narrow airway. Unlike adults, children with sleep apnea may not snore loudly, instead, they may toss and turn, sweat at night, or wake frequently. During the day, they might seem overly tired, hyperactive, or have difficulty focusing.

Many of the first signs of sleep-disordered breathing can be seen in the mouth and jaw. That’s why regular visits to a pediatric dentist are so important - not just for teeth, but for your child’s overall health.
Supporting More Than Just Smiles
At Agape Pediatric Dentistry in Peachtree Corners, we believe that a healthy smile starts with healthy sleep. Recognizing and Addressing Pediatric Sleep Apnea

As a parent, knowing what to look for can make a big difference. Some signs of pediatric sleep apnea include:
-
Snoring or noisy breathing during sleep
-
Mouth breathing, especially during the day
-
Restless sleep or frequent waking
-
Daytime sleepiness or mood swings
-
Difficulty concentrating or behavior challenges
-
Bedwetting after the age of 6
If your child shows any of these signs, we encourage you to talk with us during their next visit. Sleep-disordered breathing can affect a child’s growth, learning, and emotional well-being, but it’s treatable.

At Agape Pediatric Dentistry, we’re trained to recognize the dental signs that may point to sleep apnea. These include a high-arched palate, narrow jaws, enlarged tonsils, or signs of teeth grinding. We’ll take the time to carefully evaluate your child’s airway health as part of our comprehensive exams.
When needed, we work closely with pediatricians, ENT specialists, and sleep doctors to ensure your child receives the most appropriate care. We also offer treatment options that can support proper jaw growth and help open the airway, including Myo Munchee therapy and Growth Guided Orthodontics.

Treatment for pediatric sleep apnea depends on the cause, which can range from enlarged tonsils to improper jaw development. At Agape, we offer several gentle and non-invasive options to support better breathing:
-
Myo Munchee Therapy to strengthen oral muscles and encourage nasal breathing
-
Growth Guided Orthodontics to support healthy jaw development
-
Habit assessments and guidance for thumb sucking or pacifier use
-
Referrals to trusted sleep and airway specialists if further evaluation is needed
Our goal is always to help your child breathe, sleep, and grow their best, because a healthy smile starts with a healthy body.

If you’ve noticed signs of disrupted sleep or breathing concerns in your child, we’re here to help. Sleep issues can impact more than just nighttime rest - they can affect school performance, behavior, and overall development. At Agape Pediatric Dentistry, we believe in whole-child wellness and are committed to partnering with families to support every aspect of their child’s health.
